This month saw the return of our bi-annual trip north to the NEC & our biggest professional
calendar event - Optrafair! With all my patients seen, I headed straight from my regular Saturday clinic to Parkway station. As a keen cyclist, and one not often far out of the sight of our glorious home city it is a rare treat to travel and relax at the same time. A weekend away from my young family is always a bit of a wrench, the prospect of meeting new product suppliers, testing the latest tech and catching up with old friends over a quiet drink is a great draw though. At Turners Opticians we take caring for our patient’s vision and eye health very seriously, part of this commitment is investing in the best equipment as well as regular training updates for our great eye care team. One of the nice findings from this trade show was that although some of the packaging has changed, the technology we use every day at Turners is keeping us at the cutting edge of eye care in Bristol. Our extended eye exam plus, including sophisticated 3D eye scans and detailed peripheral vision testing, is helping each week to provide our patients the thorough and in-depth eye care they deserve. I was quite simply stunned by some of the exciting new frame collections on display this year. From exquisite ladies styles, inspired by Liberty Fashion House print, through the new Max Factor collection (yes, you can now fully co-ordinate your glasses with your eye makeup!) to the soon to be released high performance, ultra-clear vision sports glasses from Adidas us active types have been waiting for! Watch this space (and our website) for details of the arrival of these new glasses. If you are like me, and often find choosing new glasses a little daunting, fear not. From these new collections I found no less than six frames I just loved! As a dedicated husband, I have learnt that it is always good practice to choose a few new styles for my wife Jo as well. She has about 20 to choose from so we will both be modelling a new look very soon! A pleasing find was a new digital lens for glasses - aimed at easing the effort more of us are putting into our busy live!s. These lenses help to relieve eye strain before it starts and let us see our tech (tablets, phones, computers, smart watches... the list goes on) clearly and much more comfortably. They also help to soften the effort required to look close up for long periods providing not only clear, but also comfortable vision all day long. I cannot wait to try these new lenses in the next few weeks. After the craziness of meeting so many new people and viewing many exciting new frames and lenses it was a relief to escape for a long overdue catchup with friends and a quiet drink. It was such a treat to chat to friends I first met over 20 years ago, and find that although we see much less of each other these days our friendship remains as strong as ever. The overriding joy of the weekend away came from spending time with the people I got to see. From making new friends to affirming existing friendships, all was done with the goal of continuing our commitment to outstanding eye care for our patients - many of whom have also become friends. I hope to see you soon!

I am Peter, Principal Optometrist at Turners Opticians, a third generation family practice. I also work part time as a Senior Optometrist at the Bristol Eye Hospital which has greatly increased my knowledge and clinical practice - for our patients benefit. I share both my grandfather Harold & father Philip’s passion for thorough eye care which started in 1939. Since joining the practice in 1999 a lot has changed! Our team has grown and now includes four Optometrists, a Qualified Dispensing Optician, Eye Care Team and Office Team. My vision is thorough eye care for all our patients. As my grandfather Harold taught my father Philip and I, care for each patient as a special individual. I did realise that, although we talk to our patients and customers daily, and many had such lovely positive things to say about us we had not undertaken a patient satisfaction questionnaire. On the back of this I launched a survey. I was truly amazed at the results. The stand out responses that became the overriding theme of the answers was the trust our patients have in us and just how delighted they are with our service and quality. I was so flattered by the results that I decided to change our Turners Opticians logo wording from ‘since 1939’ to ‘trusted since 1939’. I have gained additional Hospital level qualifications in detecting and treating Glaucoma as well as diagnosing and treating Dry or Watery eye conditions and Blepharitis. Fellow Optometrist Ginny and I are on an MSc course to better detect and understand damage to the back of the eye from diabetes or macula degeneration, this is further enhancing eye care for our patients. As a spectacle wearer myself I understand the importance of not only seeing clearly but also looking the part in glasses. Our latest designs include collections from the Italian fashion houses of RayBan, Calvin Klein and Armani which sit along side the more boutique Coco Mint and the world renown Polo Ralph Lauren. Clinically we have increased the length of our eye care appointments up to 45 minutes to allow time to listen and understand the individual needs of our patients, thoroughly check the health of both the front and back of patients eyes and included our sophisticated 3D eye scans and detailed peripheral vision assessments. Extended eye exam appointments, available to both NHS and private patients, can be booked by calling the practice, popping in to see our friendly team or via our website www.turnersopticians.co.uk. We hope to see you soon! As a parent of three amazing children, I am often asked at what age should children have their eyes checked. Usually an ideal time is in the six months before they start school, and then once every year or two. If your child reports any vision symptoms such as blurred vision, eye rubbing when reading or watching TV (unless just before bed time - which is quite normal), jumping or moving of words, eye ache or headache around their eyes then the time for an eye check has arrived! Our Optometrists are all parents of school age children themselves and enjoy caring for the eye health and vision of all children. We know that some children can find the thought of going for an eye check all a bit different so we have some books (Bumposaurus the dinosaur who needed glasses is a favourite) you are welcome to read to your children; pop in 10 minutes before their appointment and you can read the book with them in the Practice. I have worked with young children and babies in the Eye Hospital, so am happy checking the eyes of any age child. Child eye care appointments are provided without charge, under the NHS, and can be booked by telephoning the practice or just pop in. If your child’s vision needs help from glasses, either for seeing the school board and television or reading and computers, our two free pairs for kids (NHS voucher) mean you can have a pair for home and school or two different looks. It is not just us parents who get two pairs of glasses these days! Servicing and repairing the glasses of younger patients is all part of the fun of caring for young eyes. We are always very happy to service children's glasses without charge. It is very important that all children have correctly fitting glasses. You are welcome to pop in and see one of our experts for fitting advice - even if we did not supply your child’s glasses. In our profession is seems that barely a month goes by without a new spectacle lens or contact lens being launched. Our team love this as we are always on the look out for new tech to try so we can recommend the best lenses or contacts for our patients individual needs. Some of you may enjoy tasting fine wines, we enjoy trying glasses and contact lenses (as well as wine!). This week the Turners Eye Care team were among a select few invited to the launch of an amazing new contact lens. I will admit to being quite particular about the contacts I wear and I was impressed. The new Oasys 1-day lens is designed to give you clearer vision, protect the health of your eyes and provide all day comfortable wear - what more could we ask for from a contact lens. Just get in touch or visit our website (www.turnersopticians.co.uk) to request a free trial today. We hope to see you soon! |
