Our Optometrists are dedicated to caring for your Children's vision. They are parents themselves and enjoy working with young eyes & are adept at making your visit to Turners Opticians as enjoyable as possible.
Young Eyes Extended Eye Exam
Our extended eye exam for young eyes is a good starting point if you or your child have any vision concerns. The extra time above an NHS sight test allows your optometrist to include extra vision assessments which can point towards more complex underlying binocular vision or vision stress problems.
We also offer an Irlen vision assessment. This is often recommended by an education professional, and is a separate assessment of your child's need for a precise colour tint to help when reading or learning. (The Irlen syndrome may also be called scotopic sensitivity syndrom, Mears Irlen Syndrome or Vision Stress Syndrome).
Often a coloured overlay, precise glasses tint or vision therapy eye exercises (or a combination of these), can be a huge help to young people who are finding reading, computers or school board work more challenging that it should be.

Vision Therapy Clinic (Optometrist Led Behavioural Vision Therapy)
If your child is experiencing difficulties with school work or studying and reports symptoms such as words moving on the page, jumbling of letters, lines of text jumping, blurred vision, general reading difficulties or trouble concentrating on school work Peter's Vision Therapy Clinic is highly recommended.
You can choose to see Peter at both our Fishponds and Henleaze practices.
Peter continues the work his Dad Philip started over 30 years ago. Peter will take time to listen to your child's concerns, consider the environment in which they experience visual difficulties as well as carefully examining and assessing the strengths and weakness' of your child's visual system.
One of the differences with this thorough approach is the way in which we consider the use of our eyes. In simple terms using our eyes is sight, however we actually need vision not just sight to be able to understand and interact with the world around us.
Sight - looking at an object e.g. Letter or Number
- E.g. We see a bus coming
Vision - a learned awareness and perception of visual experiences that results in a thought process and / or physical action.
- E.g. We see a bus coming and decide it is the one to take us home so we step forward arm raised asking the driver to stop for us.
Following a detailed behavioural optometry visual assessment Peter will provide a written report. The resulting diagnosis guides a personal treatment plan for your child should you wish to consider optometrist behavioural vision therapy.
Just what is Optometrist Led Behavioural Vision Therapy?
The art of arranging conditions so that the patient becomes aware of new relationships in their visual world, and through these new relationships learns to utilise processes that allow them to extract a greater amount of information in a more efficient manner.
This is physiotherapy for your visual system.
