Now you’d be totally correct wondering just what DC Comic characters have to do with glasses. Choosing the right type of sunglasses for the summer months can be a real headache for those sensitive to bright light. Think scrambling around for your shades when driving only to have to dig out your regular glasses minutes later when the sun’s gone in. We like to give you all the details and guide you as you make the best possible decision when it comes to your vision. In this case, I thought I’d write about well known superheroes. Batman, as the Dark Knight, is playing the Polarising lens and Superman, as the Man of Steel, is playing the Transitions lens as we guide you through your lens options. Let me introduce our 1st superhero: Superman, as the Man of Steel, is playing the Transitions lens Transition lenses have come a long way since they first emerged and developed a reputation for taking hours to respond to changes in light. Can you imagine a plot where Superman was needed and just took forever to get there? Our latest lenses use super-smart transition technology to instantly adapt to changing light, providing optimal eye protection from glare and harmful rays while reducing eye fatigue for maximum comfort - think Superman being there exactly when you need him! Similarly, transition lenses are great for those who don’t necessarily suffer from glare problems but are mildly irritated by bright light. They do all the hard work for you, (as you’d expect your superhero to) adjusting to just the right level of light input. We can even add our contrast enhancing lens – ideal if you want that extra bit of performance from your sun darkening lenses and struggle with glare when driving at night, too. Then let's consider our 2nd superhero: Batman, as the Dark Knight, is playing the Polarised lens Polarised lenses were created almost a century ago by Edwin Land, the inventor of instant photography and the founder of the Polaroid Corporation. It sounds like Edwin had his own ‘Bat Cave’ to work in, hence needing such a light protective lens when out & about. Polarising lenses work by blocking certain types of light from reaching the eye. Normally, light blasts at our eyes from every direction. Polarised lenses block out light reflected from horizontal surfaces – for example the glare from the road surface on a sunny day. Sounds ideal for a dark loving superhero. They’re great for drivers, those who like being out around water, people with cataracts or age-related macular degeneration and for those who have recently had procedures that could cause light sensitivity - such as cataract surgery or blepharitis & dry eye. So, what’s the verdict? Both transition and polarised lenses have drawbacks and benefits when compared to the other option, much as Batman can’t fly, and Superman can’t handle kryptonite. Some people just don’t get on with transition lenses while for others, polarised lenses don’t give them the ease and flexibility they’re looking for. There is also the option to combine the two, after all even Batman and Superman worked together on occasion. Due to a variety of options, it’s always worth calling in to see us for your eye care and lens consultation to ensure you get the optimum lens for your individual needs. (Oh by the way, those of you who wear Tom Davies glasses that we’ve designed for you have that in common with Clark Kent played by Henry Cavill, who wore bespoke Tom Davies glasses!) Our expert team is ready and waiting to give you the time needed to look after your eye health and vision. Call our Henleaze practice on 0117 962 2474 or our Fishponds practice on 0117 965 4434. We look forward to seeing you soon! Peter The names Batman, Superman, The Dark Knight & Man of Steel are the property of DC Comics and are used only for reference. We’ve probably all had a dry or watery eye at one time or another; it's just part of being a human. For some of us though it can be a real drag, even a life changing experience - I'll explain this one later.
Now if you've had an eye concern yourself then you've probably either tried eye drops, or even been to see someone about it. I found myself in this position in 2013. My eyes went from being very sore, gritty and dry feeling to watery in almost the blink of an eye! At that time I'd been an Ophthalmic Optician for around 14 years, yet I'd not been able to understand why I had the problems I did. I tried the obvious eye drops, rubbing my eyes and yes blinking. Each day I had the same problems return. Eventually I'd had enough. I found a super chap based up north who at that time was seeing patients from all over the country - he must know a thing or two about dry & watery eyes I thought! It was a worthwhile trip, watching how he diagnosed and treated his patients. His methods were effective and actually quite straightforward. What he didn't answer was the why. My modus operandi, is knowing the why. Clinically speaking, once we have a diagnosis for you then we can follow a step by step treatment plan to the point of resolution. It took a long time to get answers, but being tenacious I kept going until I did! Our approach is now an initial diagnostic assessment, then we'll give you a detailed explanation of our findings, and importantly why you have your symptoms. Then we'll explain to you how we’re going to get you the results you want. We often get asked “can’t you just tell me which drops to use”. The short answer is no! The long answer is that to provide you with an effective, personalised treatment plan we need to carefully examine the front of your eyes on our sophisticated equipment to understand the nature of your eye troubles. Once we've a diagnosis we can even offer advice based on the salt (osmolarity) of the tear products we advise for you. I had the privilege to once meet a chap who had a watery eye experience that was out of this world. Literally in his case as he was an astronaut! The story goes that whilst out on a spacewalk he got some of the visor oil in his eye. Yes really. His eyes began watering, now I’m not sure if you know what happens when your eye waters in zero gravity, but I do. Let me tell you. Because of the zero gravity the only force directing the path of the water is it’s own surface tension. If you’ve guessed that this means you get a blob of oily water covering your whole eye and stopping you seeing anything then you’d be correct. Now ordinarily if you found yourself in zero gravity with this issue presumably you’d just wipe it away. Imagine yourself in a bulky space suit with a large domed visor over your face - out in space of course. What now? Clearly you get on the radio and say ‘Houston we’ve got a problem...’ I’ll write part two of this story another day. To benefit from a diagnosis, (which is so much more than just an assessment), our gentle & effective treatments, as well as thorough aftercare, you're welcome to contact us to arrange your appointment in our dry & watery eye clinic. You can now benefit from Eye-Light IPL & LLLT too! More information can be found here: Eye-Light IPL LLLT See you soon! Peter |
