How it works
A sight test often just covers the very basics of your visual functioning. Many patients have had a previous opticians appointment, and have been told that their eyes are fine. However you or your child may feel that this is not the case.
Good eyesight does not necessarily mean good vision. Seeing an object, understanding what it is, where it is and how you are going to interact with it needs more than just sight. Your visual system is a complex set of processes that need to work in harmony, in an effortless and sustainable way.
You may have heard of a Myers Irlen/Irlen Syndrome test; also known as a scotopic sensitivity test or coloured lens assessment. Coloured tints can be prescribed to help reduce visual stress. The use of coloured overlays or specific coloured tints have been reported to help around 30% of patients, and we are happy to test this here at Turners. You can read more about precise colour testing here.
In addition to these tests, as a Behavioural Optometrist, Peter has an even higher success rate in helping his patients to see, read and play sports, with his Eye Gym (Optometric Vision Therapy Clinics). If you, or your child are experiencing difficulties with school work or study, such as: words moving on the page, jumbling of letters, lines of text jumping around, blurred vision, general reading difficulties or trouble concentrating on (school) work, then Peter’s Vision Therapy Clinic is highly recommended for you.
If what you have read so far rings true, the Vision Therapy Clinic with Peter is available at both our Fishponds and Henleaze practices. During the assessment, Peter will take the time to listen to your child’s concerns, consider the environment in which they experience visual difficulties, as well as carefully examining and assessing the strengths and weakness' of your child's visual system. The key difference with this thorough approach of testing the eyes is taking the time to consider how we really use our eyes. In simple terms, using our eyes is what we call our sight, however, we actually need vision not just sight to be able to understand and interact with the world around us.
We recommend you also have a look at our Visual Development & Retained (Primitive) Reflexes page, you can read it here.
Following a detailed visual assessment Peter will provide a summary report and diagnosis. The resulting diagnosis guides your personal treatment plan for you or your child should you wish to consider Eye Gym (Optometric Vision Therapy - OVT).
